Overview
Juniper is rich with outdoor heritage, and few names shine brighter than Fred Grant. An accomplished artist, trapper, snowshoe maker, taxidermist, fly tyer, and salmon guide on the Southwest Miramichi River, Fred’s contributions to the region run deep. In the 1930s, he created the famous “Grant Special” fly pattern, a design that proved so successful it became a must-have for anglers. To honour his legacy, a striking 14-foot sculpture of the Grant Special Salmon Fly was unveiled in 2018 — one of the largest salmon fly sculptures in Canada.
Visitors can uncover more of Juniper’s rich history at the Juniper Community Centre, a former schoolhouse located behind the iconic Grant Special Salmon Fly. The History Room highlights the life and legacy of Fred Grant, as well as other notable locals, including the Honourable Hugh John Flemming, former Premier of New Brunswick, and Harry Whitfield Bradbury, owner of "The Outlaws" camp. Bradbury also served as chief game warden for Carleton County and beyond, earning recognition for his success in bringing even the most elusive offenders to justice. Don’t miss this fascinating exhibit!
Juniper continues to draw fishing guides, storytellers, and outdoor enthusiasts from near and far — making it a community where tradition, history, and nature come together.
